I think my bromeliad is dead?

I bought it off the clearance rack it didn't look so good some of the ends were brown, but looked semi healthy. Two weeks ago I pulled the center out, and today i was pulling what I thought to be dead leaves and the whole bunch of leaves came off. Now it is just the center like the base it's brown. I'm guessing it is what held all the leaves together.? I haven't check the roots, but it hasn't been over watered or anything, so I don't know what could of happened. Any advice? Can I bring it back?
